Hilda was the aunt of Jane (Dove) Jesseau, her father's sister. Unfortunately we know nothing of her service record. But I have begun to do some searching. I will let you know if I find anything. I never thought to ask her about her military experiences. And we have no photo of her in uniform... She was called 'Hillie' . After the war, she did spend the vast portion of her working career with the Red Cross in St John's. And always carried herself erectly, as if she were still in uniform. For in those days Red Cross workers wore uniforms. And she never did drop her military habit of using the 24-hour clock. When she'd be planning on arriving in Corner Brook for a Christmas (or other) visit, she'd say that she'd be arriving at Deer lake Airport at (for example) 08:00 hours (Oh-eight hundred hours), or at 16:30 hours (sixteen hundred thirty hours). |
