LT/X. 20188A. RNR. (Patrol Service). H.M. Trawler Juniper. 18th June, 1940. Age 20. Son of John Henry and Georgina Chapman; husband of Gertrude Chapman.
Notes or comments: Tree class, purchased December 1939, commissioned March 1940 and joined 19th A/S Strike Force in Orkneys, in Norwegian campaign April/May, escorting tanker from Tromso when sighted squadron comprising Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Admiral Hipper and four destroyers. Sailed to meet flying battle ensign and lasted incredible 90 minutes before before being sunk by Hipper gunfire, four survivors (Toghill: Trawlers1; Colledge: Ships RN Vol2)


LEWIS, Gertrude (1921 - 2008)
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Gertrude Lewis announce her passing at the Central Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor on October 7, 2008 at the age of 87. Gertrude was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12 . Predeceased by first husband, Charles Chapman, (1940), husband, Harold Lewis, (1988), son Charles (2006), 4 sisters & 4 brothers. Left with fond and loving memories are sons: David (Judy) of Grand Falls-Windsor, Keith (Marg) of Grand Falls-Windsor, Wayne (Elaine) of Grand Falls-Windsor, Trevor (Kathy) St. John’s, daughters, Carol (Gary Barker) of Grand Falls-Windsor, Velma (Herbert Fancey) of Lethbridge, AB, daughter-in-law, Sheila Lewis of Mount Pearl. Also leaving to mourn 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews from Hull, England, and special friends - the War Brides. Father William Hearn conducted the funeral at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Friday, October 10, 2008. Interment was at the Roman Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were sons, Keith, David, Trevor, Wayne, son-in-law Gary Barker, grandson Mark Lewis. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Sheila Goodyear, Mike Goodyear, Jennifer Pender of Central Funeral Homes. Donations to the Children Wish Foundation accepted.
