Dear Jackie:
email received 11-02-26 8:16 PM

I found your site on NL war brides and was so happy that you had taken up this cause. My mother Helen Upward (nee) MacDonald was a war bride and married my father Leonard Upward but I have to look up the basic information on exact dates that she arrived and than submit. I wanted to make sure that first of all you are still working on this site with updates. I am submitting a picture of her as she looked when she first came to NL where she settled in Harry's Harbour, Green Bay. She came from Fort Augustus, Scotland and was a beautiful woman inside and out.

They raised 5 children: Jewel, Hilda, Gloria, Brian and Ian and she told me stories growing up of other war brides who became homesick and could not endure the hardships that they faced moving to some of the little outports in NL and who left their husbands and returned to their homelands. She was not one of them. She was an active member of her community, and was a fearless woman who would have made a great politician in that she would fight for her beliefs. When she passed away in 2002, she was given a full honor service for her involvement in the Woman's Legion and for role in the United Church, UCW, Library and many other contributions. She also actively sold marriage licenses and was involved in census taking, ballet counting and was a CGIT Leader.

She loved music and played the mouth organ and accordian and would dance the Highland Fling at local concerts in our community. She was loved by her children and her community. My father was the same loving kind of person and they were both given full services tributes. My father for being a member of the Masons and also the Legion.
Gloria

Email - Feb. 28, 2011 ... I recognized several other people on the War Brides Site who were friends with my parents. The Hamlyn's, and another Upward family, Ida and Pearce Upward. My parents have passed on and are sadly missed. The rest of my family, with the exception of my younger brother Ian, all live in different communities in NL. Ian and I live in, Ontario.
Gloria
